Explore a private Patagonian wetland, spot more than 80 bird species, and look for condors on the way back
After picking you up from your hotel, a one-hour drive from Puerto Natales takes us to Vega Castillo, a 450-hectare wetland on a private sheep ranch and one of the richest places for birdwatching in the area.
We arrive early in the morning, when bird activity is at its peak. Pickup time varies between 4:00 and 8:00 AM depending on the season.
We then spend the morning walking a flat 6.5 km circuit around the lagoon, the reed beds and the native forest, stopping at observation hides that protect you from the wind.
Your guide carries a spotting scope and binoculars and helps you find and identify each species, from black-necked swans and Chilean flamingos to small reed-bed birds that are hard to see elsewhere in Patagonia.
In summer, more than 80 bird species live in the wetland. On a good day, you can expect to see around 40 of them.
At midday we stop for a picnic lunch and a rest, while bird activity slows down.
On the way back we take a different road through Cerro Castillo, crossing open steppe where Andean condors are often seen flying over the hills.
If there’s time and you’d like to continue, we finish along the coast of Puerto Natales, looking for waterfowl and shorebirds.
A full, relaxed day of birdwatching in Patagonia, with a local wildlife guide who knows this area all year round.
Further down, you’ll find pricing, inclusions, and everything you need to plan your tour.

RESPONSIBLE BIRDWATCHING
At Ecordua, we care about keeping the wetland and its birds undisturbed.
Vega Castillo is a working sheep ranch that protects its wetland as a private conservation area. Access is limited and arranged in advance.
We visit in small groups of up to three people, stay on established paths and hides, and keep a respectful distance from nesting areas.
Because it’s a working ranch, raptors such as eagles, caracaras and condors are common here, feeding on livestock lost to pumas and foxes. It’s a good place to understand how the Patagonian food chain works.
The species you see are recorded on eBird, a global database used by scientists and conservation projects.
One percent of every Ecordua booking goes to environmental organizations through 1% for the Planet, and our guide contributes an additional 1% to wildlife conservation projects in Chile.

Frequently asked questions
What should I wear or bring?
We recommend comfortable outdoor clothes in neutral colors, waterproof walking shoes, a windproof jacket and extra warm layers depending on the season. Also bring a hat, gloves, sunglasses, sunscreen and water (1 to 1.5 liters, ideally in a reusable bottle). If you have your own binoculars, bring them. Before your experience, we’ll send you a pre-tour preparation guide with more details.
Do I need birdwatching experience?
No. Your guide will help you find and identify the birds, and will show you how to use the binoculars and spotting scope. Beginners enjoy this tour as much as experienced birders.
Is Vega Castillo inside Torres del Paine National Park?
No. It’s a private ranch outside the park, so you don’t need a national park ticket. The ranch entrance is included.
Can I do a shorter day?
Yes. The base day is about 8 hours. If you want to add the coast of Puerto Natales, the day lasts 10 to 12 hours. You can decide during the tour.
Can I combine it with the puma tracking tour?
Yes. Both tours are led by the same guide. With two days in Puerto Natales, we recommend puma tracking first and birdwatching second.
Can children participate?
Yes, when accompanied by a responsible adult. Keep in mind the early start and the long day.
What happens if the weather is bad?
We go out in most weather conditions with the right clothing, and the hides help a lot. In extreme conditions, we reschedule, offer another activity or give you a full refund.
What is the cancellation policy?
You can cancel up to 24 hours in advance for a full refund.
